The Stonewall Riots were a series of violent conflicts between LGBT people and New York City police officers that began during a 28 June 1969 police raid, and lasted several days. They were centered at the Stonewall Inn and are widely recognized as the catalyst for the modern-day movement towards LGBT rights. Also called the Stonewall Uprising, Stonewall Rebellion, Stonewall Revolution or simply Stonewall, the clash was a watershed for the worldwide gay rights movement, as gay, lesbian and transgender people had never before acted together in such large numbers to forcibly resist police harassment directed towards their community. Many also credit the events as igniting a movement to celebrate gay pride with events such as pride parades and dyke marches. - Wikipedia1

The theme for this pride march is: “Pride and UP: Isang Daan Taong Kasaysayan ng Pagtatanghal ng Dangal.” The march will take place at 10:00 AM on June 27, 2008.  Convergence point will be Vinzons Hall.  After the march, a forum will be conducted from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  At 6:00 PM of the same day, a festive and fun Cultural Night will take place.

This Pride March is sponsored and organized by the Gender Committee of the University Student Council (USC) of UP Diliman.

Latak (Residue)

Posted: 01 Jul 2008 08:55 PM CDT

What if a nightmare faces you?

What happens when your hallucinations are fast catching up with reality?

From the writer and director (Jowee Morel) of “Mga Paru-parong Rosas” and “When a Gay Man Loves” comes another compelling digital independent film, Latak.

Latak is a film about a young director, Andrew Locsin, and his discovery of the cruel betrayal of his lover and friends.  His vice triggers a destructive entanglement of his dark past:

An ordeal that was haunting his unconscious and graphic memory, surfaces. Thrown into a mix of spine-chilling hallucinations and paranoia he comes face to face with the mysterious ghosts of a mother and a girl. With no one to trust, the demons in his nightmares appear in his fight for survival in a horrifying doomed reality.

In a modern trendy setting, “Latak” depicts the grim reality of the middle class Philippines that the poor Filipinos dream of.

Extracted from a tumultuous true to life events, the film will take you into the dark side of grim reality.

The film stars young and upcoming actors as well as a star-studded support cast. Newcomers Marc Jacob, Zach Urdaneta, Mercedes Cabral, Chanel Latorre and Pia Millado topbill this very promising film from Outline Digital Films. Also in the film are Tiya Pusit, Dan Alvaro, Chito Alcid and Boy Villasanta.

I’ve seen a lot of independent digital films (and their trailers) but this one, I can say, seems like one which will not disappoint. Check out the trailer and more information at http://www.LatakMovie.com

The weekend that has just passed was a big event for many gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders as the whole world commemorated the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 28 1969.

Here in the Philippines, Gay Pride Parties were organized in Malate and Makati (some said that street parties and festivities were not allowed in the city of Manila).

Pride festivities were also held at the University of the Philippines in Diliman on June 27.  That was followed by an LGBT Forum and a cultural night. Photos from the forum from our transgender friend Pau Fontanos here.

We all know that gay men, Filipino gay men to be more specific and nationalistic, are very talented individuals — in whatever field they are and wherever they are.  Proof of that is our local gay pride festivities and the participation of our gay (and lesbian, bisexual, transgender) friends who are far away from the Philippines. We give kudos to these men and women for their courage, passion, and pride in bearing the Filipino gay flag all over the world!

Danton Remoto also has some nice words and a few stories to share about Pink Power here.

In Toronto, Canada, Filipino members of the gay community represented the country in colorful and beautiful ternos.  Check out the photos at Adobo Republic!

In the United States, the Filipino contingent wowed audiences with their exceptional performance during the march in Chicago, Illinois.  It was the first time in the history of Chicago’s Gay Pride Festivities that there was a separate Filipino contingent. The Filipino contingent made their first mark a glamorous one in the 39-year history of Chicago’s Gay Pride by winning the Best Organization Float award! (Read more about it and view photos on Ted Regencia Reports).

Curious as to what the gay Pinoys did during the festivities? Watch this video by Ted Regencia:

More from the United States — at the San Francisco Pride, Filipinos joined the Asia Pacific contingent.  Also, one quite well-known gay Pinoy in the Filipino gay blogosphere appeared as March’s hottie in the Asian Men Redefined 2008 Calendar . He is no other than Pooh, the partner of SF blogger Tiggah who is very famous among Filipino gay bloggers here and abroad.  Why is Tiggah famous? Check out his blog about himself and his partner, about food, and pretty much anything and everything (as in everything you can imagine, wink wink) that’s going on in their lives.

These are just some of the fabulous presence of the Filipino gay community at Pride festivities all over the world. These definitely show us all that the Filipino gay man is truly fantabulous, whenever, wherever!

Mabuhay ang Baklang Pilipino sa buong mundo!

Bakla’s LazerXtreme Experience

Posted: 30 Jun 2008 12:31 AM CDT

lazerxtremeLazer what?  Lazer Xtreme!

LazerXtreme is an exciting fantasy game that allows you to the sci-fi hero you’ve always wanted to be in the form of laser-powered guns and a battleground that looks like those you see in compter war games.

I’m not a big fan of sci-fi chuvaness, but I am a fan of competitive games. I don’t like shooting games and war games online, but I like them live.  Paintball and stuff like that.  And now, I think I’ve found the kind of “sporting activity” and game that suits me well — LazerXtreme.  I’m not kidding.  This is definitely something I want to do on a regular basis.

LazerXtreme

Girl, boy, bakla, tomboy — it does not matter what or who you are when you play the game.  All you need is just the right amount of drive and passion for playing. LazerXtreme may be a hidden secret of some people, but not anymore!  This new establishment opened just last May and is starting to get some buzz — thanks to word of mouth. And after playing a couple of games, I found out why many people are so into this.

We began with a briefing inside this X-Men/Star Wars-like room. We were given enough information for us to understand the rules of the game and the high-tech and high-end equipment used. After the briefing, we moved into the pack room where we put on our vests.  Entering the room built more excitement for me whe I saw the Battlesuits and the lights attached to it.  We donned our Battlesuits (complete with lights and Phaser Gun attached to the vest).

LazerXtreme

For the first game, we were divided into two teams.  For the second, we were divided into three. The objective of the game is to score as many points as you can by shooting members of the opposing team and/or destroying their base. You score points when you hit the lights on an opponent’s battlesuit.  The lights are located on the shoulders, the front, and the back.  You also score points if you hit an opponent’s Phaser. If you really want to score big points, then aim for the opposing team’s base, shoot it multiple times until you hear the notice that the base has been destroyed. Oh and yes, you can actually see the laser beams coming out from your guns! When someone hits you, your gun and equipment gets deactivated for a few seconds.  After which, you can start shooting again… unless another opponent hits you just when your gear activates.

LazerXtremePhoto by Poyt

Even if I am so competitive and even if I wanted to score high points, I opted to just hit opponents.  It’s not fun to just stay at one corner and aim at the base. I wanted to get the feel of an actual battle so I ran around the whole arena, ducked and hid in some areas, climbed up the ramps, and shot as many opponents as I could.

The game lasts about 15 minutes, but you don’t feel like it is that short.  It actually feels a lot longer while you’re inside the arena. After the game, you all head to the vest room to take off your Battlesuits and discuss the game that just concluded.  You will then be escorted outside to the look at the scoreboard and get your scoresheets. The winners and the losers (per player and per team) are posted on the screen as well as on the scoresheets, which you can bring home for posterity’s sake.

After the game, you can opt to replenish burnt calories and used-up energy with food and drinks available onsite (their soft tacos are the best!).

LazerXtreme also offers different types of customizable packages for groups of friends, birthday parties, and corporate events.  They have function rooms and in-house dining too.  (I’m actually thinking of celebrating my birthday there). Their packages are very affordable and so worth it!

So if you’re searching for something to do on a weekend or a lazy weeknight, a different kind of birthday celebration, something different to do while you’re in the mall, or a team-building activity, then I highly suggest that you try out LazerXtreme!

(Thanks to Benj of Atheista.net for organizing the event.  Had so much fun with these bloggers too: BJ, Lakwatsero, Teknostik, Baratillo Cubao, Fool45, A Bugged Life, Tanggera, Rebel Pixel, Fritzified, Bakla Ako and Jehzlau Concepts. And thanks to LazerXtreme for the very warm treatment and the great treat!)

Pa-VIRGIN Ka Naman!

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 07:42 PM CDT

Ah!  Virgin, Virgin, where art thou?

It’s Virgin Labfest time again!  And this time, it’s bigger, brighter, and well, even brighter!  What is Virgin Labfest?

“The Virgin Labfest is a venue for playwrights, directors and actors to bring to life ’untried, untested, unpublished and unstaged’ one-act plays,” explains festival founder Rody Vera.1

The Labfest begins today, June 25, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.  There are many reasons why catching this theater festival of sorts is more than worth it:

  1. Stairwell to HellGibbs Cadiz is giving away free tickets to the Virgin Labfest.
  2. You get to see the talents of our own theater groups and theater performers.
  3. There are three gay-themed plays in the Labfest.
  4. You get the chance of winning a prize (just by blogging about the plays you’ve seen) courtesy of the organizers.
  5. The Labfest ticket price for the main exhibition sets is only P200, and that gives you entry to three plays already.
  6. (Other ticket prizes are P100 for the symposium and “Pay What You Can” for play readings.)
  7. You can now tell your ka-eyeball that you are a person who has culture and breeding because you watch plays.
  8. You will have fun!

So what are you waiting for? Check out the plays and their schedules here! Pa-Virgin ka na!

On Identity Theft and Online Impostors

Posted: 23 Jun 2008 09:29 PM CDT

Let me just state it here formally that my ONLY YouTube account is http://youtube.com/ajkenji and I do not have any other accounts with YouTube aside from that.

http://youtube.com/ajmatela is not owned by AJ Matela.

Someone apparently is mad at me, or wants to make fun of me, or I don’t know what,  and signed up with youtube on May 29. 2008 using my name ajmatela. The video shows the transcript I created for the audio file “I Kell You” and a screencap from one of my videoblogs.  To add insult to this injury, the person used “I Kell You! (With Transcript/the agent” as the title, implying that I am the agent in the call.

The greatest insult of them all is that the person had the audacity to put the caption/title on the video that says: “Do You Know Who Am I?”

Come on!  I do not write English like that!  I will never ask a question with incorrect sentence construction.  It’s “Do You Know Who I AM?” and not “AM I” Please!

So friends, I implore you to help me report his user by flagging the video for copyright infringement and/or inappropriate content. If you can, please also report the user to YouTube Authorities.

Celebrate Beauty, Experience Olay for Free!

Posted: 23 Jun 2008 08:10 PM CDT

Girl, Boy, Baka, Tomboy… No matter who you are or where you’re from, I’m sure you’ve already heard of Olay. Thanks to product endorsements by some celebrities, and a massive campaign in the quad-media, Olay has now become a household name for beauty products.

Although Olay is marketed as a product for women, I know of many members of the male population - straight and gay alike - who tried this product.  I myself included. When the ads came out,  I was curious but never really tried the product.  Months later,  after hearing different user experiences regarding the product, I decided to try one Olay product - an Olay bath soap (not Total Effects, I think).

I’m not kidding and not just saying this, but the product really worked.  I used it differently though.  Instead of using the bath soap for the body,  I used it for the face!  I knew it worked since I noticed my skin getting clearer and cleaner.  What made me realize that the product worked was the numerous comments people made about how clearer and more beautiful than it already was.  Olay worked!

Olay Total Effect

Several people asked me about what I used and I just said Olay.  But that was not enough for them.  They needed to know the exact product name and variant so they could purchase one for themselves.  That’s when I realized that I was using the “wrong” Olay product.  Apparently, the Olay that was being advertised online was something called Total Effects and what I was using was just plain Olay, not Total Effects!

I wanted to try Total Effects but I didn’t want to invest too much money on it. Then came the FREE OLAY TOTAL EFFCTS Sampler! Anyone and everyone can avail of free smaples of Olay Total Effects simply by going to the Olay Website. You don’t only get a free Olay product, you also get a P100-voucher! Try it now and discover why so many women claim that only Olay gives you the benefits of 7 anti-ageing treatments in one bottle.
To avail of the free Olay Total Effects 8g sample,

1. Fill out the registration in the website (www.olay.com.ph).
2. Choose your preferred branch from among the participating Watsons branches where you can claim your free sample.
